Hooters for Sale

The Hooters restaurant chain is reportedly up for sale, desperate for cash as business has fizzled.

The restaurants — known for waitresses wearing short-shorts and down-to-there tank tops — could sell for more than $250 million, analysts tell The New York Post.

The Post reports that Hooters has hired North Point Advisors, a San Francisco investment bank, to help with the sale. The restaurant isn’t officially commenting on rumors that it has been shopping itself to private-equity firms.

I certainly don’t have $250M lying around to foot the purchase of this chain, but I do have some thoughts on what I’d change to attempt a reboot of the franchise.

For starters, I’d reinvent the menu.  Burgers and fries are OK, but let’s get serious about the “man food” concept.  Let’s stick some steak, baked potatoes, chili, and stew in the line-up.  Plus, I think it’s important to get someone in the kitchen who actually knows how to cook well.  The couple of Hooters restaurants in my general area both serve significantly less than average food fare.

Next, let’s ditch the identical outfits idea and give the girls a little variety to pick from.  I’m OK with the whole shorts and tank-tops notion, but it’d be nice if they didn’t all look like cookie-cutter duplicates of each other… and the girls would probably appreciate being allowed to be a little more selective about their work wardrobe.  Plus, I’m pretty sure that the patrons will still be able to pick out the wait staff without them all looking exactly identical.

Finally, how about a little entertainment.  I’ve been to a couple of these restaurants, and found them rather dull.  If you’re going to require your staff to fit certain physical parameters for the patrons, then why not showcase them?  Give the girls a little extra salary if they volunteer for on-stage performances from time to time… like singing, dancing, stand-up comedy, or whatever else they can do (provided it stays within the guidelines of “family restaurant”).  Some girls would probably volunteer eagerly so that they can put their performances on their CV… and hope that one day a talent agent or casting director may happen upon them.

In truth, I wouldn’t loose any sleep over it if the entire chain were to close down.  However, if someone does buy it up… then I certainly hope that they attempt to do something productive with it.

You hit it on the head when it comes to Hooters. The outfits are more of a gimmick than anything, but the biggest problem is the food sucks!! It doesn’t matter what kind of theme a restaurant has, if the food is bad the restaurant will do poorly.
