Lindsey Vonn’s Sports Illustrated Cover

Apparently Lindsey’s cover photo on the latest Sports Illustrated has sparked a lot of debate.

Lindsey Vonn is hoping the Sports Illustrated cover jinx doesn’t cross international borders. America’s great Winter Olympic hope is featured on the front of SI’s Winter Olympic preview issue, which hit newsstands Wednesday.

Vonn’s semi-provocative pose has drawn the predictable ire from those who claim that it objectifies her. She’s an athlete, not a sex symbol, the chorus inevitably reminds us.

I only have one question…

Why can’t she be both a strong athletic figure and a sex symbol?

Seriously!  I’ve known many women in my life who were strong, intelligent, determined,… and just dead sexy!  There’s no reason that these have to be mutually exclusive.  So I say kudos to Lindsey for not being afraid to attract a little attention by showing herself off a bit.  She’s a beautiful woman that deserves both attention and respect.

In When I was in high school and college I worked in the radio-TV repair business, some technicians would examine a customer’s set and “see” trouble where there was none. This was clearly dishonest and could get the offender kicked out of the Guild. Apparently, however, militant Feminists are not bound by such constraints. Also in those days I did some skiing, and the pose shown is the proper one for downhill schussing. It lowers one’s center of gravity and reduces aerodynamic drag. The suit is also intended to reduce drag. If the combination happens to trigger someone’s libido, that’s not the fault of the subject or the photographer. There are enough reall problems; we don’t have to invent fake ones.
