FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The parents who carried out the balloon boy hoax were sentenced to jail Wednesday and given strict probation conditions that forbid them from earning any money from the spectacle for four years.

Richard Heene was sentenced to 90 days in jail, including 60 days of work release that will let him pursue his job as a construction contractor while serving his time. His wife, Mayumi, was sentenced to 20 days in jail.

90 days?  That’s it?  And he gets to do his regular job for most of it?!  Ridiculous.

So exactly who is responsible for the cost of all the man power and resources that were uselessly expended in chasing that balloon, dealing with the legal proceedings, and even televising every last minute of this nonsense?  For God’s sake… if you’re not going to seriously punish these people, then at least BILL THEM!!!

And they’re not allowed to “earn money from the spectacle for four years”… wtf.  Were it up to me, these people would not EVER be allowed to earn one thin dime out of this hoax.
